Anthony Community Care Center was founded on May 27, 2000, when it was purchased by the
City of Anthony in a desperate attempt to keep the facility
from closing. Formerly owned by a management chain, the
staff did the best they could to provide care for the
residents, but frequently did without many things required
to provide optimal care. Supplies were limited,
vendors went unpaid, and employees were left to wonder what
was going to happen. The building itself had received
no improvements for over a decade. The roof leaked so
badly that 55-gallon drums were strategically placed in the
hallways when it rained. Maintenance consisted of
doing what could be done without spending any money.
It was only the dedication of the employees that kept the
facility operating. It was not a big surprise when the
word came from the corporation that the facility was to be
closed down within a matter of days. When the city
leaders learned of the predicament, they took action and
somehow managed to purchase the facility. It was a
miracle. The years since the change of ownership has seen
many improvements to the facility. In the summer of
2000, on the two hottest weekends of the year, over 70
volunteers from the community replaced the entire facility
roof. Beginning at 5:00 a.m. in an attempt to beat the
relentless August sun, work was done under a fire truck
spotlight until the sun came up. It was a magnificent
sight. Many, many people have donated their
time, money, and efforts to help the nursing home succeed.
Today the
little nursing home is a different place. Employees and residents co-mingle in their
relaxed environment. During a time when many homes are facing a staffing crisis
our employees turnover has decreased significantly, our employees enjoy benefits many
have never had before and our residents receive the care they deserve. We take great
pride in our nursing care and without a corporate office to support are able to our funds
into the delivery of good care. It shows, too. Community Care Center has received two
deficiency free surveys from the State of Kansas as well as an Exemplary
Care Award in 2003.
As our care improved, we focused on making additional repairs
to the building and purchasing new equipment. With the help and support of the community
we have made great progress.
The living room carpet was pink, stained, and stinky.
Two wonderful ladies from the community held a benefit garage
sale raised money for new carpeting.
Staff members held a painting party to repaint the commons area. Our creative activity director and several
residents made new wall decorations. We purchased a bird aviary using memorial money that we had received.
Now we have a nice cozy room for gathering to visit, watch TV, or sing and dance.

Our new nurses station makes life better for everyone. The old nurses station was cramped with no
workspace.
We also added windows so the nurses can see in the living room.

Renovating the kitchen was a chore but it sure has been worth it. Now everything is stainless steel
and the work flow is much smoother.

We have purchased new equipment so our residents have what they need to be comfortable and well cared for.
A walking path and garden has expanded our living area. Just think what we will be able
to accomplish in another year or two!

ACCC is truly a one of a kind success story.
